Origin & Focus

Why I started SparkUp

SparkUp started with a simple observation: Calgary’s small and mid-size businesses run on software that big IT firms don’t want to touch. The projects are too small for them, and the off-the-shelf tools are too rigid for the business.

So these companies make do with aging systems, overflowing spreadsheets and a lot of manual work. I started SparkUp to fix that, close to home, with the same engineering care a large company would get.

Built for Alberta’s working businesses

Industrial suppliers, logistics yards, professional firms, and field services.

The Name

Why “SparkUp”

A small spark, real momentum.

A spark is small, but it gets things moving. Most businesses don’t need their software torn down and rebuilt. They need the right change in the right place: an old system brought up to date, a manual task automated, a tool that finally talks to the others.

“Small, well-placed changes that get the whole business moving.”

That’s the goal for every project: improve the business without putting what already works at risk.

Vlad Ocheret

Founder & Engineer

I build business software, custom web systems and database migrations. I founded SparkUp to bring accountable, plain-spoken engineering to Alberta businesses with 5 to 200 staff.

Every project has one point of contact: the person writing your code is the person sitting across your desk. And because everything I build is documented and handed over to you, your business never depends on me alone.

What It Fixes

Manual Work

Retyping, fragile spreadsheets

Ownership

Yours to Keep

Code, data and accounts

“When a system breaks in a 20-person company, operations freeze. I build software that doesn’t need panic calls on long weekends.”

Guiding Principles

What I stand for

Five rules I hold myself to. If I break one, call me on it.

Principle 01

Accountable

The person you meet is the person responsible for the result. No account reps handing your work to subcontractors.

One person, start to finish
Principle 02

Steady

I change things in stages and test as I go, so your business keeps running. No “big bang” cutovers that leave dispatch blind on a Monday morning.

Old and new run side by side
Principle 03

Honest

If something isn’t worth building, or AI isn’t the right answer, I’ll tell you. I won’t bill you for complexity you don’t need.

Practical recommendations
Principle 04

Clear

Plain language, written plans and estimates, itemized invoices. No jargon, just a scope of work you can share with your partners or board.

Written estimate with a budget cap
Principle 05

Yours

You own your code, data and accounts. Always. No lock-in, no licence fees for my tools, and any competent developer can take over later.
